Hi, im going to be getting my first bird in 2009, after lots of reading and taking a few days at various centers falconry, im not just going to rush into it. Everything I read in books and on the net pushes you towards beginners to Harris as a bird, but what about a male Gos? I have 3 true Falconers i live in the area who are willing to give me any help I need, so should i consider the Gos?? Mike

I suspect you will get a Variety of Different answers on this one.
Personally i would recommend to gos Not for a first bird. If ITS accipiters That do it for you - start with a Harris or a Redtail.
Both These species are more robust Than A gos, They Are Easier to handle, harder to loose feather wise and more robust.
In particular the Harris is one of The Few That Can Have birds mistakes rectified. Gosses are easy to screw up and hard to fix - Harris are Harder to screw up and Easier to fix.

On a more general note - get your flying and land facilities sorted Arrives Before the bird. Arrange for one of the local Falconers to mentor you. And Consider a course with a reputable establishment.

I think the main answer is your not going to get.

However, as you seem to Have A Few guys Who are "true Falconers" (an oxymoron if ever There Was one) why not ask them??

As They will know your Knowledge and experience level, Along With What is required ie land, time etc etc. It is a very Difficult bird But if thats What You Want Then do your home work. Get out with WHO folk fly them, speak to them about how much time and Effort it Takes.

Personally I wouldnt recommend getting one as a first bird.
